Youth Opportunity Center (Delaware County Juvenile Detention Center)
Services Provided:
The Delaware County Juvenile Detention Center: The Muncie Community Schools provides an educational opportunity for all students who are detained in the Detention Center. Students who are detained remain enrolled in their home school. A certified teacher and an instructional assistant provides educational support in classes the students are enrolled in as well as GED prep materials for students whom are no longer enrolled in school. There are 2 classrooms for students to work in quiet and well supervised environments. (Usually two students per class)
Cost
The cost of being detained is unique for each county (The Delware County Juvenile Detention Center actually works with 15 other schools through different counties, not just Delaware County).
Each county has a contract set-up through the school district that the student is a part of, and the county then handles the costs.
The overall price for the county includes medical assistance, shelter, education, food (3 meals, 2 snacks) (certain diets), clothing. Delaware County is responsible to handle all costs of their students being detained.
What individuals need to bring
The only thing that individuals need to bring are any medications that they may be required to take. All other items are issued to the students (detainees).
Process for getting services (i.e. referrals needed, demonstrated need, etc)
All children must be approved through the Juvenile Probation Department (after a referral from the school)
Transportation (parking lot & nearby bus stops)
Court orders parents to drop off the kids (trust system with the courts/parents). In some instances, parents can pick-up 48 hours after the weekend from the very front of the building.
Local officers usually drop off the kids (depending on the city/county)
